I’d add that the societal side is just as important here. By turning what’s currently a waste management headache (olive leaves, pomace, and wastewater) into high-value nutraceutical feed additives, WP2 hits multiple impact points:

  • Environmental: Less biomass waste going to landfill or uncontrolled disposal, which means lower soil and water pollution.

  • Economic: New revenue streams for olive producers, and local processing jobs in extraction and feed additive production.

  • Food security: Healthier poultry and fish products with longer shelf life could reduce food losses at retail and consumer level — OLIWA is targeting at least a 25% reduction.

  • Social acceptance: The fact that WP2 also tackles safety and acceptance is crucial. Demonstrating that these extracts are safe and beneficial for animal health will help farmers and consumers accept the idea of waste-derived feed additives.

It’s not just about extracting natural compounds from olive by-products — the plan is to produce olive leaf, skin, and wastewater extracts rich in oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and maslinic acid, then test them both in vitro and in vivo. That’s scientifically huge because:

  1. They’re aiming to boost extraction yields several-fold using pre-treatments and controlled maturation.

  2. They’ll validate bioavailability and safety using advanced models — from cell lines to ApoE KO mice.

  3. The dose-response data feeds directly into later WPs for feed formulation.

From a scientific standpoint, WP2 will generate new datasets on antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as cardiovascular health markers. That’s pretty novel, considering no one has yet systematically connected olive waste bioactive fractions with measurable animal health and product shelf-life outcomes.
